Training

All the research clusters within the New Political Economy Initiative aim to provide training and mentorship opportunities for students (advanced undergraduates, master’s and early doctoral candidates), early-career scholars/practitioners, teachers, instructors (or pedagogues), analysts and journalists. The aims are two-fold, first, to help build their capacity and develop new research agendas with targeted mentorship, and second, provide exposure and training in fundamental and frontier areas of research on the economy; we do this both for methods and substantive issues.

These programmes take the form of winter or summer schools, short-term hybrid or residential trainings in IIT Bombay.

Economy and Society Winter School 2025

Alibaug, Mumbai 8 - 20 Dec, 2025

Economy & Society Winter Schools is a 14 day residential programme, a key initiative under NPEI’s Social Structures of the Economy Research Cluster. Through this Winter School, the New Political Economy Initiative at IIT Bombay aims to nudge sociology, political economy and social science scholarship, more generally, in India and the Global South to study how the material aspects and economic facets of life are produced and reproduced through social and political processes and be attentive to the mutual embeddedness and symbiotic relationships between markets, states, societies, and cultures. Research that explores how social networks contribute to shape, and are shaped by the accumulation of capital, in both formal and informal economic settings, is relatively scarce. Similarly, there is a lack of academic studies that examine how shifts in institutions shape and influence the context and results of economic actions. One of the reasons for this absence is the lack of courses/papers/modules in economic sociology in most undergraduate and master’s programmes in the country. We have found a similar trend in other countries in the Global South.

Complexity Global School for Emerging Political Economies 2023

IIT Bombay and University of the Witwatersrand 3- 15 Dec, 2023

The 1st Complexity Global School (CGS) for Emerging Political Economies was organised as a 12-day intensive program as was a collaboration between the Santa Fe Institute (USA), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (India), and University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). The programmed was organised concurrently in both India and South Africa.

Led by a diverse group of scholars in complexity, economics, and governance, the Complexity Global School focused on methods, models, and new frameworks for analyzing complex phenomena in various social, economic, and political spheres. One of the central aims of the program continued to use these multiple lenses to reimagine the fundamental paradigms that organize political economies, fostering a deeper understanding of their complexities and empowering innovative solutions to address today’s most pressing challenges.

The second and the third edition of this winter school were continued at La Universidad de los Andes in 2024 and 2025.
