Carol Upadhya is a social anthropologist and a Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) in Bengaluru, where she heads the Urban & Mobility Studies Programme. Her work broadly covers the impact of development and economic change, urbanization, capital and labor dynamics, and migration in India. She has particularly researched the Indian software industry and its social and cultural aspects. She has authored and co-edited several significant works, including “Reengineering India: Work, Capital, and Class in an Offshore Economy” (2016) and “In an Outpost of the Global Economy: Work and Workers in India’s Information Technology Industry” (co-edited with A.R. Vasavi).
